Periodontal Maintenance
¿What is it?
We must keep in mind that periodontal disease cannot be cured, only controlled, just like other diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. To prevent the reactivation of the disease, it is essential for the patient to have good daily oral hygiene and for the professional to perform regular check-ups.
During these regular check-ups, a professional cleaning will be performed and the state of the gums and bones will be verified. We will compare the current state with previous results to determine if the disease has progressed or remains stable.
It is important to note that in patients with poor oral hygiene, a pathogenic bacterial flora can be restored within 6-8 weeks.
This is why we recommend monthly periodontal maintenance at the beginning, gradually increasing the time between appointments depending on each patient until they are performed every 3 to 4 months.
With periodontal maintenance, we aim to prevent not only the loss of teeth but also to reduce periodontal disease as a risk factor for other systemic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, improving the patient’s quality of life.
